Arizona’s Ban on Abortions Struck Down in Federal Court - NYTimes.com:

A federal appellate panel struck down Arizona’s abortion law on Tuesday, saying it was unconstitutional “under a long line of invariant Supreme Court precedents” that guarantee a woman’s right to end a pregnancy any time before a fetus is deemed viable outside her womb — generally at 24 weeks.

The law, enacted in April 2012 despite vociferous protest by women’s and civil rights groups, made abortions illegal if performed 20 weeks after a woman’s last menstrual period, or roughly 18 weeks after fertilization, even if the woman learned that the fetus had no chance of surviving after birth. At 18 weeks, many fetal abnormalities can be detected through sonograms.

In its opinion, the panel of three judges assigned to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco wrote that a fetus’s viability “varies from pregnancy to pregnancy,” which should be determined by doctors, not legislators.

People on my tumblr list are talking about Venezuela as a place where feminism is taking a step forward so I decided to remind us of some of the finest moments for women in Venezuela-under-chavism.

Let’s not forget MY FAVORITE bit of Slut-Shaming of all time (bottom-most picture), which I saw on my way to work years ago. “Inciting sex brings on rape!” with several women in revealing outfits.
Below: “Bolivarian Government of Carabobo” and big-as-heck to the right: “SECURITY is EVERYONE’S CORRESPONSIBILITY (sic)”

The chavista government has been in power for 14 years. Chavez was babbling about these labor laws back in 1999 - they don’t have any real intention of executing them. And though I am open to be proven wrong - as I hope I would be - how many more years will we allow this mess to go on on the premise of “Oh, it’s only beginning to get good NOW?”

From my personal experience, I’m sure in four or five years we’ll look back and, once again, see nothing of results from this law. Or, more likely, we’ll see infinitely small results proportionate to what could have been achieved by a better, less bloody government.
